Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch
In an effort to encourage students to consider a career as an entrepreneur, the Government of Ontario and Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), are pleased to be bringing back the Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch high school competition.
The competition challenges students in grades 9 to 12 to pitch their business ideas in a two-minute video to be voted on by the public and expert judges. Finalists will receive a trip to Toronto (including transportation and hotel for the finalists and their chaperones) to present their ideas in front of a judging panel at OCE’s Discovery Conference and Trade Show on May 12-13, 2014. Six winners will then be selected and will be presented with a reserved entry into Summer Company to develop their business idea (worth up to $3,000).
Last year we received numerous entries from students across Ontario in grades 9 through 12, with 18 finalists making the trip to Discovery held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto. The businesses represented a variety of ideas from online fundraising to lawn care services to clothing design.
The competition is run by OCE on behalf of the Government of Ontario and presents an exciting opportunity for high school students to learn about the benefits of a career in entrepreneurship and of starting their own business. Student participants will also receive expert guidance on pitching a business proposal.
The competition requires that video entries are made accessible through the inclusion of a transcript, which also raises awareness among students of the value of creating communications for people of all abilities. Please visit www.MakeYourPitch.ca for an example of a transcript.
This competition is a great way for students in your school to gain valuable skills and experience and will inspire them to apply the lessons they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations.
• Video submission period: ends March 28, 12:00 p.m., 2014

Change the World by Volunteering
The ChangeTheWorld – Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge is an annual campaign for youth aged 14 to 18 to volunteer a minimum of three hours. The 2017 campaign runs for 6 weeks and kicks off during National Volunteer Week (April 23 to 29) through to June 3.
ChangeTheWorld is delivered through a partnership between the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration (MCI) and the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network (OVCN).
ChangeTheWorld challenges high school students aged 14 to 18 to volunteer three hours over four weeks. Participation in this campaign is open to all secondary school students and contributes to the 40-community involvement hours required to obtain an Ontario high school diploma.
Last year, more than 28,000 youth volunteered a record 124,000 hours in more than 300 communities, working with their schools, local volunteer centres and community agencies. This year, 23 volunteer centres representing communities across Ontario are helping to organize volunteer opportunities and connect students to them.
